Filling the Can with Water

Hammering Holes Around the Pattern

1. Rinse out your food cans.  Soak them in water if the labels are hard to remove.  The larger the can the larger design you can make.

2. Fill the cans 3/4 full of water and set them on wax paper in the freezer.

3. Wait until the water is completely frozen in the cans.

4. While you are waiting for the water to freeze, you can make a pattern, some fun designs include stars, candy canes, candles, and flowers.

5.  Take out the cans and place them on a towel for padding.

6. If you made a pattern, you can secure it to the metal can using a rubber band.

7. Now using the hammer and nail, create small holes all around your pattern, or create a unique freehand design.

9. Allow the ice to melt and dump it out in the sink.

10. Place your luminaries on your front porch or along a walkway.  Put small votive candles in each one.

11. Ask an adult to help you use long sitck matches to light the candles.

12. Enjoy the light your luminaries will bring to your home to a cold winter night!
