Begin by conditioning the white clay. To condition the clay, warm it in your hands and begin shaping or mashing it. It will take several minutes to get the clay soft enough to roll out with the rolling pin. Roll out a flat sheet of clay about 1/8' thick.
Cut around your photocopied image so that there is a small white border around the design. Put the image on the clay picture side down. Press the paper to the clay--you can even use the rolling pin to seal the paper to the clay. Make sure the paper is sealed and that there are no air bubbles or creases. Leave the paper on the clay for at least 30 minutes. Use the craft knife and trim the clay so there is a small border around the paper. Slowly peel off the paper. Be careful, the toner will be sticky and can smear. You can add a decorative border by making designs with the needle tool.
Wash your hands and the rolling pin so that there are no traces of the white clay left. The clay colors will not mix, so if any of the white clay is left on your hands or the rolling pin, it will get into the black clay and look like white spots. Condition the black clay. Roll out a sheet of black clay about 1/8' thick. Place the white piece of clay on the black sheet. Gently press the corners of the white clay onto the black clay. Carefully cut around the white clay leaving a small black border.
Bake the clay according the directions on the package. Allow the clay to cool after baking. To antique the pin, use the craft knife to make scratches and lines on the pin. Paint with the burnt umber. Use a damp paper towel to wipe off the paint. This will leave paint in the scratches and the decorative border. Glue the pin back onto the pin.
